Lawrence Lessig and Read/Write
Posted on December 23rd, 2008 at 11:13 am by David Thornley and

Just finished watching a lecture by Lawrence Lessig from Stanford.  His latest book, Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy deals with the need to update copyright/fair use laws to reflect the way it is being used as a communication platform by kids.  Had to include this fabulous mash-up he gace as an example:

Educating a Democracy
Posted on June 23rd, 2008 at 6:50 pm by David Thornley and

Deborah Meier is an advocate of smaller community-based schools. Her piece in the November 2002 Boston Review Educating a Democracy: Standards and the future of public education sends a welcome shot across the bow of the misguided ship HMS Standards-Based Reform Movement. Citing the school board of Lynnfield, Massachusetts’s attempt to end METCO, a program bringing minority children of color into nearly all-white, middle class, suburban communities because the program wasn’t helping “raise their standards” as an example, Meier asserts that such attempts reveal, “a dark side of the standard’s-based reform movement in American education,” which she describes as a “a fundamentally misguided approach to school reform.” Meier does not believe that standards should be tossed out. She questions the political motivation behind the movement as well as the assertion that weaknesses in public education were responsible for undermining the economy. She believes in a different approach embracing smaller schools and Sizer’s belief that standards must be “held by real people who matter in the lives of our young.”

to the photo on Flickr you’ll be able to see some additional
information about the equipment. The new gear includes a Heil PL-2 boom, Electro-Voice RE20, and Model 309 shockmount.
